Where it is
Gadji is New Caledonia's main learning site, and it earns that role partly through timing: the wind fills in later here than at Ouen Toro near Nouméa, so it's the fallback when you've missed the window there. It also has a reputation as a magic spot for sunset flights, with warm, smooth air at the end of the day. There are three takeoffs to choose from — a carpeted one at 100 m on the ridge, a well-oriented and efficient one at 200 m on top of the ridge for southeast wind, and a lower, east-facing one on the left side of the landing area. Getting there means following the expressway past Tontouta airport, turning left toward Gadji about 10 km after leaving Nouméa, driving 5 km, turning right onto a track, and continuing another 5 km to the beach, where the site sits on the right. The site works well in moderate southeast wind but turns dangerous if it swings to east-northeast — when whitecaps start appearing on the water, it's time to land. Landing is in the field just below takeoff, at a 1:1 glide ratio.
Launch & conditions
Three takeoffs exist: a carpeted one at 100 m on the ridge, a well-oriented and efficient one at 200 m on top of the ridge for southeast wind, and a lower, east-facing one on the left side of the landing area.
Getting there & local rules
Follow the expressway past Tontouta airport; about 10 km after leaving Nouméa, turn left toward Gadji, drive 5 km, turn right onto a track, and continue another 5 km to the beach, where the site is on the right.
Local rules & hazards
The site sits right under the boundary between Magenta and Tontouta airport control zones, both Class D airspace starting at 700 feet — and the southern end of Maa peak is a VFR reporting point where aircraft and helicopters transit, sometimes below the controlled airspace floor, so stay alert for traffic. The site works well in moderate southeast wind (from south-southeast through east-southeast) but turns dangerous in an east-northeast wind — when whitecaps appear on the water, it's time to land.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Gadji, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Gadji with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
