Beechmont launches from a well-maintained site beside Rosins Lookout on Beechmont Road in the Gold Coast hinterland of Queensland, Australia, with easy access directly from the road. At 530 m and facing easterly, the takeoff is popular for thermic afternoon flying through summer, though gusts can build quickly once thermals get going. Power lines run down the northern side of the launch toward the valley and are visible in site photos, so a careful line is worth planning before committing. Wind directions from north-east through east to south-east suit the site best, and it's flown for thermalling, ridge soaring, cross-country and hike-and-fly. The bombout landing sits on Pocket Road, at least a 45-minute drive from the launch, so retrieves need planning ahead. Flying here requires membership of Australia's national hang gliding federation and registration with the local club, and a modest visiting-pilot fee applies. There's no water at the bombout, so carry enough for the walk back up the hill.

Expect thermic, sometimes gusty conditions on summer afternoons — check current conditions and talk to local pilots before committing to launch.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Beechmont, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Beechmont with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
