Where it is
Balberget SW (Harahemberget) is an intermediate-to-expert cliff launch in the Västerbotten inland of northern Sweden — cliffs are generally unforgiving and produce their own wind currents, so fly with care. It sits below the top of the mountain so has less venturi than other options on Balberget. XC potential looks promising: south wind lets you push north-west along a line of hills, or north into the flatlands. Other parts of the mountain may work better in SE winds for range-line flying inland, but the landings there get harder. First flight to Skellefteå or Luleå is still waiting for someone.
Launch & conditions
Cliff launch. The hang-glider ramp at the cliff edge needs maintenance (rotting at the top; bolt-anchored ropes have not been serviced in at least 10 years — treat as unsafe until repaired). Paragliders should set up further up the clearing, well back from the cliff, with careful layout to avoid snagging lines. Winter snow would make this site much easier to launch.
Getting there & local rules
Hike up the front can be challenging. The public road only goes part way; a gate blocks the rest — reportedly a military road, not shown on public maps. A key was said to be held by the (now inactive) local soaring club. In winter access requires roughly a 3–4 km snow-shoe through the forest along a gentler grade than the steep front. Landing area lies directly below with an easy glide — seek the farmers' permission for the fields, or land on the dirt road.
Local rules & hazards
Standard FL95 airspace, but Umeå TMA at FL20 is not far to the east — respect it. Cliff launch means sharp wind gradient at takeoff — real risk of stall or collapse. Beware cross-winds. Wave is likely because of the rolling hills in front — expect unusual gusts in laminar / non-thermic conditions. Landing area may sit in the lee of low hills in stronger south winds.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Balberget SW (Harahemberget), read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Balberget SW (Harahemberget) with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
