Where it is
Fuzz is a now-closed sub-site of the well-known Horse Canyon flying area in the San Diego County backcountry of Southern California, launching from a small, unimproved east-facing slope above a cliff on the opposite side of the valley from the main Horse Canyon takeoff. It was never a beginner option: local pilots treat it as expert-only, and visiting pilots are expected to fly here only alongside someone who already knows the terrain. The tight, rocky set-up area leaves little margin for a bad launch, and the site has effectively fallen out of regular use because the risk rarely feels worth it compared with better options nearby. Santa Ana wind events, which blow strong and dry out of the desert across Southern California, make Fuzz genuinely hazardous, and it should not be flown when they're active. On convergence days, timing matters too — it's better to wait for the opposing wind from the Horse Canyon side of the canyon to ease off before considering a flight.
Launch & conditions
The launch faces east across a small, unimproved slope leading to a cliff, on the southwest side of the valley opposite the main Horse Canyon takeoff. Setup space is tight and rocky, which raises the bar for a clean launch even in otherwise reasonable conditions.
Local rules & hazards
This is treated as a closed, expert-only site: local pilots hold advanced ratings, and visitors are expected to fly only with a local guide. Santa Ana wind conditions make the site genuinely hazardous, and it should not be flown when they're present.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Fuzz (Closed), read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Fuzz (Closed) with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
