Miller Canyon

Miller Canyon is a Sky Islands site south of Sierra Vista, Arizona, at about 1,492 m — a classic Sonoran-high-desert soaring venue with major XC April through July. Launches face NE, E and SE, in the lee of Miller Peak (~9,500 ft) and Carr Peak (~9,000 ft), which often means thermals block the prevailing westerlies and let pilots launch safely into what looks like a bad wind day. Those over-the-back winds then give a great tailwind for XC lines to the east and northeast. Because of that rotor-and-thermal mix, wind on launch is often shifty, so summer launches usually happen early (10 am to noon). USHPA is required; the site accepts H4/P3 without question, H3/P2 only with cliff/turbulence/awareness and appropriate experience, and H2 only with a local sponsor when conditions match skill level. Controlled airspace hugs Fort Huachuca and a two-mile aerostat radius to the north — do not fly north of Carr Canyon Road east of Route 92.

Launch & conditions

Perfect launch conditions are light SE. Prevailing pattern is light SE morning, 10-15 mph NW afternoon. Local wisdom: fly this site only with a local pilot regardless of rating — desert weather is unpredictable and often powerful, dust devils flip gliders on occasion, thunderstorms build without warning, and rotor in westerly components can catch you on the glide to the LZ. The SE cliff launch in strong conditions requires solid cliff-launch skills. Radio: SAHGA club frequency 151.925 (USHGA Ch. 2).

Getting there & local rules

4WD is needed and access is controlled with a key and special-use permit — a locked gate sits a mile from launch, and club members carry the keys. Room for 5 vehicles and 25 gliders at launch, more if using the road. LZ elevation is 4,781 ft, right next to Nick's Bar, which has phone, restrooms and pool tables — the barmaid monitors the club frequency, so radio traffic here should be friendly to the establishment. LZ is less than a 4:1 glide from launch, but with a westerly rotor wind you may not make it. Land-owner cooperation matters: no public urination, do not overfly cattle or the barbed-wire fence in the LZ corners.
