Villa Grove

Villa Grove sits in the San Luis Valley of southern Colorado — a Sangre de Cristo range site with the launch at about 9,300 ft MSL (2,950 m) and the primary LZ around 7,500 ft on miles and miles of grass and short-sage fields. The Sangres run from 12,000 ft to over 14,000 ft, unbroken for over 60 miles south of launch. The site offers both ridge soaring and thermal flying — often flyable year-round. This is at the end of a large valley, which limits XC potential: unless you can get VERY high, don't attempt to push beyond the ridge, and 'over the back' flights typically require reaching at least 16,000 ft. Most XC flights are cross-wind or into-wind to the south, with restrictions around the Great Sand Dunes National Monument (do NOT land there).

Launch & conditions

The launch faces SW at 9,300 ft MSL. This tends to be a strong-wind site, better suited to hang-gliders than paragliders. For paragliders to fly safely, the forecast winds should be 10 mph or less — winds on top can be 2× the LZ wind. July and August bring a monsoon pattern with huge cumulonimbus clouds — flying anywhere near these is very hazardous.

Getting there & local rules

From Salida, take Highway 285 south; from Alamosa, take 285 north. In Villa Grove, turn east toward Hayden Pass — you'll pass the LZ (marked with a sign and windflags, large parking area). Continue toward Hayden Pass and take the first (and only) turn-off to the left. A sign further along the road carries advice worth heeding. 4WD with high clearance is a MUST, low gear recommended — do not attempt any lesser vehicle.

Local rules & hazards

P2/H2 site with RMHPA membership required. Mid-day flights are restricted to P3/H3 pilots because of turbulence and wind. XC flights to the south are restricted by the Great Sand Dunes National Monument — do NOT land there. Wind on launch can be twice what the LZ shows, so verify conditions on top before committing.
