Where it is
Nirgua launches from a compact takeoff — around 500 m² — at 1,165 m in Venezuela, with wind direction depending on the season: pilots launch south in the dry summer months and switch to a north-facing takeoff during the rainy season. The site sits amid pine forest, and the launch itself is kept in short green grass that protects wings during setup. Thermals typically start popping by around 10 a.m. over the main landing at El Nido — a large farm at 745 m surrounded by orange groves in a scenic valley — giving pilots XC windows of over two hours and heights up to 2,500 m and beyond. Getting there from Caracas takes about 2.5 hours: the Autopista del Centro to Valencia, a detour through San Carlos, then the road through Bejuma toward Nirgua and Barquisimeto, where gliders start becoming visible in the sky as you approach. Weather here is tropical and warm at launch altitude, though it turns noticeably colder above 2,000 m, so pack layers accordingly. There's no formal flight regulation, but wind and thermals can build strong — reading conditions carefully matters, and local pilots are usually around to offer advice.

Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Nirgua, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Nirgua with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
