Where it is
Ceres Mountain, known locally as Waboomberg, looks out over the dry fruit-growing valley of Ceres in South Africa's Western Cape, launching from 1,696 m as a genuinely thermic inland site. To the east lie the salt pans of Inverdoorn and the edge of the desert, and cross-country potential is strong — the flatlands of the Ceres valley hold consistent thermals. It's mainly a spring and autumn site, since a low-pressure system over the desert tends to swing the wind west by early afternoon. Takeoff is a gently sloping fynbos field southwest of a radio mast, at the top of a serrated, cliff-lined gully, with an easy pull-up for launch. Getting there means driving the N1 to Worcester, the R43 to Ceres, then up the Gydo Pass toward Prince Alfred Hamlet — reaching the site itself means driving onto private farmland, since road-access permission needs to be arranged with the farm in advance either way in. Launch sits at roughly 1,600 m ASL with a working ceiling around 2,900 m ASL. Conditions run strong: expect vigorous thermals in high summer, turbulence right after launch, power lines to watch near the landing area, and a strong, turbulent west wind that tends to build through summer afternoons.

Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Ceres Mountain, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Ceres Mountain with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
