Where it is
Almkopf is a scenic, lesser-known launch in the Zugspitze region of Austria, at about 1,770 m, flown in a north wind and known locally as a genuinely family-friendly flying area. Getting up is easy: an 8-person gondola runs to the Hochalm at 1,620 m, followed by about a 20-minute walk to the launch and summit. Timing the day right matters more here than at many hills — the best window to catch thermals is usually before the valley wind reaches the launch, generally around 11 a.m. or earlier. Later in the afternoon, that same valley wind is typically strong enough to soar directly in front of the launch and summit instead, giving the site two distinct flying windows in one day. Lifts and other facilities around the mountain run on their own seasonal schedule, so it's worth checking opening times before planning a visit. A relaxed, welcoming Alpine launch that rewards knowing whether you're chasing morning thermals or afternoon soaring.

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Almkopf, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Almkopf with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
