Choralpe Startplatz Westendorf 300er

Choralpe (Westendorf, 300er) has the full package for an Alpine flying day: proper mountains, the Kitzbühel Alps' distinctive scenery, good launches and a large landing field, at about 1,036 m in northwest wind. In summer it's roughly a 15-minute hike up to the launches. The west launch is broad and slightly rolling, with easy room for several wings at once; the north launch is narrower and steeper, holding only two wings side by side and calling for disciplined pilots who know exactly where their gear is. Thermals are usually easiest to find from late morning, mainly just to the right of the west launch, and on a good thermal day it's a solid departure point for cross-country flights toward the Pinzgau region. Even without thermals, dynamic west wind works the ridge running either side of the west launch for soaring. The large landing field sits directly opposite the valley station, behind the car park — the oversized windsock there is hard to miss.
