Where it is
Largotz sits just below its own summit above the Inn valley near Wattens, Austria, with one of the wider panoramas in the area: the main alpine ridge to the north and the central Alps' glaciers spread out beyond it. It's a hike-up launch reached by driving as far as the Krepperhütte and walking the rest, so expect a short approach on foot rather than a lift or gondola. The takeoff faces north to northwest, which fits the site's typical pattern of east winds building through the late afternoon. Pilots should treat this as a quiet, lightly developed site — there's no formal infrastructure and no windsock at the landing field, so local knowledge and a cautious read of conditions matter more here than at a managed launch. It suits pilots comfortable making their own judgment calls on wind and timing rather than following posted rules, and it rewards a clear-weather day when the glacier views are the payoff for the walk up.
Launch & conditions
Launch is just below the Largotz summit, facing north to northwest — best used when the afternoon east wind sets in.
Getting there & local rules
From the Wattens motorway exit, head north toward Vögelsberg; you can drive as far as the Krepperhütte and walk the remaining stretch to launch.
Local rules & hazards
Coordinate flights with Innsbruck air traffic control before flying, since this is an otherwise unregulated area with no posted local rules. Winds typically turn easterly in the late afternoon; avoid launching if southerly winds are forecast, as they tend to be strong and turbulent here.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Largotz, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Largotz with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
