Where it is

Oedt is a south-to-west-facing gap launch in Austria at about 676 m, flyable in wind from roughly 180–270° once it's blowing at about 3 m/s or more. Most landings are on the meadow below the launch, though top-landing back at the launch is also possible — for experienced pilots only, since lee-side turbulence is a real risk there. After landing in the meadow, walk back up along the forest edge to the launch, especially useful when the grass is tall. The site works for both ridge soaring and cross-country thermal flights. If you haven't climbed out after your second or third attempt and conditions aren't improving, call it for the day. Cars can park right at the launch, above the road, only when it's dry; otherwise park along the road to avoid damaging the fields. Flying is only permitted until an hour before sunset, and 8 p.m. at the latest, by agreement with the local hunting community. Motorised paraglider pilots may not launch or land anywhere in the Oedt flying area.

Top-landing back at the launch is possible but for experienced pilots only, due to possible lee-side turbulence. Flying is only allowed until an hour before sunset, and 8 p.m. at the latest — these hours are fixed by agreement with the local hunting community and must be respected. Motorised paraglider pilots may not launch or land anywhere in the Oedt flying area.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Oedt, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Oedt with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
