Where it is
Rampetzreit is an Austrian thermal site at about 654 m, flying best on north-easterly to easterly wind. It's a genuinely technical launch — by the site's own description, it isn't the easiest site around — and the main hazard sits in stronger north-easterly wind: flying south-east without enough altitude puts you in the lee of the ridge ahead, where rotor and sink can catch you out. Once a pilot has climbed above the tree line, though, hooking into a thermal becomes noticeably easier. The exact line to fly depends on wind direction: in more north-easterly wind, head early for the tree row on the right of launch; in an easterly wind, aim for the opposite side instead. When the wind aloft is too strong, there's a lower alternative launch — known locally as the "old edge" — east of the village, usable as long as the grass there is still short. The site flies year-round, with no current time restriction, though grass height should always be respected.
Launch & conditions
The line to fly depends on wind direction: in a more north-easterly wind head early for the tree row on the right of launch, in an easterly wind aim for the opposite side.
Local rules & hazards
In stronger north-easterly wind, don't fly south-east without altitude to spare — you'll end up in the lee of the ridge ahead, where rotor and sink are a real hazard. When the wind aloft is too strong, a lower alternate launch east of the village is usable, conditions on the grass permitting.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Rampetzreit, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Rampetzreit with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
