Where it is
Speiereck Startplatz 2 is the summit launch on the Speiereck, the main flying mountain of Austria's Lungau region, sitting at around 2,380 m and facing south. The mountain is unusually flexible on wind direction — pilots can launch from almost any direction except west, thanks to several takeoffs positioned around the summit, and this specific launch is the south-facing one at the top. Getting up to the takeoffs doesn't require a hike: access is by club bus or the Lungau cable car, which makes repeat laps on a good day realistic rather than a one-and-done trip. Being the main mountain for the whole region says something about its reputation — it's the go-to site locals point visiting pilots toward rather than a secondary option. Landing is at Speiereck Landeplatz. Being a summit launch at nearly 2,400 m, expect real mountain conditions and confirm the forecast and current wind at altitude before committing, rather than judging by conditions at the valley floor.
