Cochrane

Cochrane is a friendly hill just outside Calgary, Alberta — a casual, popular site with an on-site flight centre (Muller Wind Sports) and instruction available. The 1,340 m south-facing launch works on east through west flow across a gentle, well-maintained grassy slope. The primary landing is at the bottom of the hill, about 88 m below launch and 460 m out over the ground, with ample windsocks around the perimeter; a backup LZ sits across the highway on the baseball / football fields. Because the site sits near Springbank airport (CYBW) and its airspace, EVERY paraglider or hang-glider flight requires a NOTAM notification to the airport. The phone number and a script are posted at the flight-centre door — once a NOTAM is issued, untie the black flag on the power pole in front of the centre; if the flag is already down, no second call is needed. Re-tie it after sundown.

Launch & conditions

South-facing grassy launch with a gradual slope for easy take-offs. Wind gusts appear from nowhere so stay alert — high winds close the site. The primary LZ has ample windsocks but tall grass, weeds, small bushes and uneven ground; a barbed-wire fence lines the perimeter.

Getting there & local rules

From Calgary, take Crowchild Trail northwest out of the city toward Cochrane. About 10.6 km past city limits, turn right (north) onto Glenn Eagles Drive, then immediately left (west) at the stop sign onto Big Hill Road. Follow Big Hill Road at or below the posted limit for about 1.6 km to Muller Wind Sports — the entrance windsock on your left is unmissable.

Local rules & hazards

A NOTAM to Springbank airport is required before every flight — phone script is at the flight-centre door, and the black flag on the pole in front of the centre must be untied while a NOTAM is active (re-tie after sundown). Flying is confined between the river to the south, Highway 22 to the west and Glen Eagles to the east. High winds close the site; sudden gusts are the main danger.
