Where it is
Mount 7, just south of Golden in the Canadian Rockies, is one of North America's classic thermal and XC sites. Launches sit between 1,000 m and 2,000 m along the west face of an 8,000-foot ridge overlooking the Columbia River valley, giving huge vertical to work and long lines both north and south along the range. It's a proper mountain site — strong mid-day thermals, real cross-country potential, and driveable retrieval on paved highway. SIV training and a properly packed reserve are both recommended before flying here; the site rewards experienced pilots and punishes complacency. Membership in the Hang Gliding & Paragliding Association of Canada is preferred for the official Nicholson landing (temporary membership is available online for visitors), and pilots must sign the landowner waiver.
Launch & conditions
Main launch is the lookout south-east of Golden, a mix of ramp and slope facing roughly west (with NW and SW variations). Multiple secondary launches at different elevations on the same face.
Getting there & local rules
2WD works but 4WD is better for the launch road. The official landing is in Nicholson, about 8 km south of Golden on Highway 95 — carry a long rope in case of a tree landing, and bring a mobile phone or radio (GMRS works well) for retrieval.
Local rules & hazards
Powerful mountain thermal site — SIV training and a reserve you have thrown before are strongly recommended. Watch for gust fronts from nearby cold fronts and thunderstorms, and never fly close to or downwind of peaks. Three Class E controlled airspace airways run nearby (Spillimacheen, Radium, Canal Flats) with variable bases. Landing at the official Nicholson field requires association membership and a signed waiver.
Check conditions before you fly
