Where it is
Alpspitze Übungshang is a lower, north-facing launch at about 915 m on the same mountain as the Alpspitze's main launches above the valley station, and despite its name ("practice slope") it is restricted to club members and is explicitly not used for basic student training — a high-voltage line to the north rules that out. The main landing field sits beside that power line and an access road, so approaches must stay clear of it with altitude lost on the mountain side. As at the higher launches on this mountain, pilots need to know the exact line of a nearby zipline before flying and keep at least 50 m clearance overflying it. Good thermal triggers form to the east above a local sports lodge and along a nearby ravine, with further options over a hilltop chapel and an eastern peak in northeasterly conditions, opening onward flights toward neighbouring peaks and the flatland for pilots who connect with them. Guests are welcome at the wider site.
Local rules & hazards
Despite being called a practice slope, this launch is restricted to club members and is not used for basic student training because of a high-voltage line to the north. The main landing field sits beside that power line and an access road, so landing approaches must not cross it and altitude loss stays on the mountain side. A zipline also crosses the flying area — check its exact cable line before launching and keep at least 50 m clearance overflying it.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Alpspitze Übungshang, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Alpspitze Übungshang with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
