Where it is
Frahelser Buckl is a training hill in the Bavarian Forest (Bayerischer Wald), Germany, at around 540 m, taking wind from the south — southeast through southwest. It's run as an Übungshang: the low, controlled slope where pilots practice launches, ground handling and short flights early in their training rather than chase altitude or distance. Flying here is arranged rather than open access — sessions are organized through the local flight school rather than dropping in solo. The site sits in a nature-sensitive area, so operations are restricted to a defined summer-and-autumn window each year rather than running year-round, which keeps flying away from the parts of the calendar when the surrounding habitat needs it most. For pilots working toward their first solo flights, it's a straightforward, south-facing practice slope rather than an alpine or cross-country destination.
Local rules & hazards
Flying is only permitted between 1 July and 30 November each year for nature-conservation reasons, and pilots are asked to be careful of the vegetation on the launch and landing areas.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Frahelser Buckl, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Frahelser Buckl with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
