Where it is
Gangelsberg is an east-facing paragliding hill above the village of Duchroth in Rhineland-Palatinate's Nahe valley, prized for reliable spring thermals whenever the wind sits in the east. Pilots reach the launch on foot from a car park near the village cemetery, following the vineyard track (Weinbergsweg) up through the vines to the take-off meadow. The site is popular but capacity-limited: no more than 15 pilots share the hill at once, and in light thermal conditions pilots take turns in the lift band rather than one pilot holding it. Hang gliders can also launch from Gangelsberg, though they generally use the alternative landing field in nearby Oberhausen an der Nahe rather than the main paragliding landing zone below the hill. The vineyard terrain and open slope make this one of the more dependable east-wind thermal venues in the region on a good spring day.
Launch & conditions
Launch is a grass meadow reached on foot up the Weinbergsweg vineyard track; there is no vehicle access to the top, and the hill works on easterly winds.
Getting there & local rules
Park at the car park by the Duchroth cemetery on the edge of the village, then walk up the vineyard track (Weinbergsweg) to the launch.
Local rules & hazards
Flying here requires an unrestricted pilot licence, and landing away from the designated site should be avoided wherever possible. The scrubland and hedgerows bordering the site are protected and off-limits on foot. Between 1 April and 31 July, nesting birds get extra consideration: pilots are expected to stay high above the terrain and avoid flying close along the slope.
Check conditions before you fly
