Where it is
Homburg is a hillside launch in Lower Franconia, Bavaria, near Hammelburg, flown on west or northwest wind at 304 m. Access is deliberately limited: guest flying is restricted to pilots from the Hammelburg and Main-Spessart clubs, and everyone flying here — local or visiting — needs a safety and hazard briefing before their first flight. Part of the launch area sits within a protected nature reserve, where landings are off-limits entirely and driving equipment in by vehicle is not allowed either, so gear has to be carried in on foot. Launches only happen in suitable weather, and the site's flight operations order applies at all times. There is one quirky local rule worth knowing before you fly: whenever the town's approved Homburg castle festival is on, launching is completely banned starting an hour before it begins. Tandem flights need enough headwind that the double-seat wing can lift cleanly off the terrain edge, and hang gliders need enough lift to clear the trees on the lower slope safely.

Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Homburg, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Homburg with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
