Where it is

Kreuzberg is a north-to-northeast launch above the Bavarian Rhön, in a forest clearing cut into a ski slope near Kloster Kreuzberg. Wind needs to come from a fairly tight window — north through northeast — because any crosswind, especially from the east, creates real turbulence risk in the clearing. When the wind is right, though, there's reliable thermal activity to the right of the launch direction over the beech forest, though the site suits paragliders better than hang gliders. Getting there means driving toward Kloster Kreuzberg, turning off at the field path just before a roadside inn on the way to Gmündener Hütte, and parking there before walking the rest of the way to the clearing. The official rule is stricter still: pilots must park at the designated lot near the Drei-Tannen-Lift and walk in from there, and launches are only permitted within that 0°–45° wind window.

Launch & conditions

Launch in a forest clearing on the ski slope; only fly with wind from north through northeast (0°–45°) — crosswind, especially from the east, brings real turbulence risk here.

Getting there & local rules

Park at the designated lot near the Drei-Tannen-Lift and walk in to the launch — driving toward Kloster Kreuzberg, the turnoff is at the field path near Gmündener Hütte.

Local rules & hazards

Only launch with wind between north and northeast (0°–45°); side winds from easterly directions cause turbulence in the clearing. Thermals tend to form to the right of the launch direction over the beech forest, and the site is less suited to hang gliders.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Kreuzberg, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Kreuzberg with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
