Where it is
Kuhhelle is a northwest-facing launch above Halberbracht at around 580 m, flown by local clubs on a site with a genuinely short takeoff — good headwind and a clean, well-timed liftoff well before the edge of the terrain are what make launches work here, not a run-of-the-mill send-off. The site runs a seasonal wildlife protection window: flying doesn't start before 10 a.m. from 1 April to 30 June each year. Every pilot needs a briefing before their first flight here, including the video-briefing style local pilots use to pass on terrain-specific knowledge. The dedicated landing field is Kuhhelle Halberbracht (LP 2), reached with a well-timed final approach. Training flights and tandem flights are not flown from this launch, so it suits pilots already comfortable flying and landing on their own rather than those starting out.
Launch & conditions
Northwest-facing launch near 580 m with a short takeoff — launch only with adequate headwind and make sure you're airborne well clear of the terrain edge, or don't launch at all.
Getting there & local rules
A briefing is required before your first flight here; check no one and nothing is in the departure path before launching, since the takeoff area is shared.
Local rules & hazards
No flying starts before 10 a.m. between 1 April and 30 June to protect nesting wildlife. Training flights and tandem flights aren't run from this launch, and pilots need enough height on departure to reach the landing field comfortably.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Kuhhelle, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Kuhhelle with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
