Where it is
Messbacher Höhenweg is a southwest-facing training site in western Germany, run by a resident flying school that limits guest-pilot access to its own school operating hours. Training only goes ahead in weather genuinely suited to students, and instructors watch for the lee effect the ridge in front of launch can create. Before a first flight here, students need to have turn flying under control and have been briefed on hill-landing technique. Parking is restricted to the designated hikers' car park at the edge of Messbach — nothing else nearby works. The ground itself is protected: no landscape changes are allowed, and the meadow areas can only be used once they've been mowed for the season. A nature-conservation supplement also caps how many flying days per year and how many pilots can use the site, keeping activity within agreed limits.

Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Messbacher Höhenweg, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Messbacher Höhenweg with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
