Nebelhorn Geißfuß

Nebelhorn Geißfuß is a demanding high-alpine launch in the Allgäu Alps near Oberstdorf, Bavaria, at about 1,949 m — launches are only permitted in southwest wind, and the site overall calls for real experience rather than a first alpine flight. The defining hazard here is a lee zone: the valley wind in this area blows from the north, and from around midday it can spill over the ridge running from the Geißfuß to the Nebelhorn, creating a genuinely dangerous lee area on the south side of that ridge — several serious accidents have happened there. When there's a valley wind, avoid that side entirely and fly on or above the north side of the neighbouring Schattenberg instead. On landing at the Seealpe field, keep well clear of the reservoir lake nearby. This is a club-managed site with its own detailed regulations and nature-protection conditions that every pilot is expected to know before flying.
