Where it is
Nebelhorn Gipfel Terrassen (Launch 1, at the southern summit station) is a high-alpine launch in the Allgäu Alps near Oberstdorf, Germany, at a dramatic 2,170 m. The minimum requirement to fly here is an unrestricted pilot's license, plus solid forward and reverse launch technique and a sound read on the weather. The valley wind blows from the north, and from around midday it can spill over the ridge running from the Geißfuß to the Nebelhorn, creating a dangerous lee zone on the ridge's south side where several serious accidents have happened — avoid that area in valley wind and fly on or above the north side of the Schattenberg instead. Launching on groomed ski runs is banned while the pistes are in use, and pilots must keep well clear of hikers, skiers, buildings and the cable-car lines. Every pilot needs a briefing on the launch's particular hazards, and tandem pilots must be briefed in person. Landing at the Seealpe means keeping enough distance from the reservoir lake.
