Schreckhof (Westhang HG)

Schreckhof (West Slope) is a west-facing hang-gliding site above the Neckar in Baden-Württemberg, at about 270 m — one of the region's older sites, first flown by hang-glider pilots back in the early 1980s, in a genuinely scenic stretch of the valley. It has a nice soaring and thermal edge, plus a launch ramp for hang-gliders; paragliders launch from a meadow a short walk further south. Guests are warmly welcome when club members are present, with a day membership fee, but registration beforehand is essential and a briefing is required before your first flight. The defining local rule is about the river: departure out over the Neckar has to happen in good time and with enough height in hand, and both the landing pattern and the landing itself must keep sufficient horizontal and vertical clearance from the water at every point. The landing field for both hang-gliders and paragliders sits on the opposite bank. Training flights require reliable radio contact with the student throughout.
