Where it is

Weikersheimer Winterberg is a small ridge site above Weikersheim in the Tauber valley, run by a local paragliding club, with about 130 m of height difference and a launch reachable only on foot — driving up isn't allowed. It flies best in easterly to southeasterly wind, but only with proper headwind at the launch: crosswind launches are banned because of lee turbulence in the gap the ridge sits in, and launching in dead calm is also ruled out since a high-voltage line crosses the departure path. If a pilot doesn't gain height right after launching, the plan is to head for the landing without delay. The flight path also crosses the L2251 road, which needs a solid 50 m of clearance both horizontally and vertically. Parking is near the landing, by the bridge into Weikersheim, and every pilot needs a briefing on local conditions before their first flight here. Guest pilots have to register with the club in advance, and tandem flights require the pilot to already hold at least 100 passenger flights and to have demonstrated a check flight on-site.

Launch & conditions

Needs proper headwind from east to southeast — crosswind launches are banned due to lee turbulence in the gap, and launching in dead calm isn't allowed either, since a high-voltage line crosses the departure path. If you don't gain height right away, head straight for the landing.

Getting there & local rules

Launch is on foot only — no vehicle access. Parking is near the landing, by the bridge into Weikersheim, and guest pilots must register with the club before flying.

Local rules & hazards

The flight path crosses the L2251 road, which needs at least 50 m of clearance both horizontally and vertically. Every pilot needs a briefing on local conditions before a first flight here, and tandem pilots must already hold at least 100 passenger flights and demonstrate a check flight on-site before flying with passengers.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Weikersheimer Winterberg, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Weikersheimer Winterberg with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
