Where it is

Àger is the beating heart of flying in the Catalan Pyrenees: a huge launch complex on the Montsec ridge at 1,560 m, enormous landing fields in the valley, and a competition pedigree that includes a Paragliding World Cup round (2007), a hang gliding world championship and the British Open. The same terrain that hosts world-class cross-country welcomes first solo flights — the take-offs are vast, the main Vertet landing near the campsite measures a forgiving 200 × 50 m, and a rescue helicopter is stationed five minutes away in Tremp. Around it all sits a lovely small town where tapas after flying is part of the routine.

Launch & conditions

Four take-offs cover the conditions, including the lower, south-facing Raudoral, which catches the first heated breeze of the day without driving to the top of the Montsec. The ridge works on southeast through westerly flow. The one hard rule locals repeat: beware the east wind — when it blows, the site is not recommended.

Getting there & local rules

From Barcelona it is about two hours (180 km): A2 towards Lleida, then via Balaguer onto the C-12 through Les Avellanes to Àger. A good road leads to launch. The Vertet landing lies near the Camping Vall d'Àger — mind the tree turbulence in north wind, and use any of the other huge fields nearby if in doubt.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Ager, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Ager with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
