Where it is
Serres Beaumont is a Provençal launch above the D22 road in the Hautes-Alpes, at about 1,430 m. The take-off works on NE, E and SE flow, and is best early in the morning when the sun lights the rocks just below the TV transmitter. It is a technical launch: the take-off sits under north, west and south wind, and east wind (anything other than a soft breeze) hitting the take-off can make reaching a comfortable landing difficult. The theoretical landing is next to the Germanette playground area, about 500 m north of the water dam. In practice, when you can't reach the marked LZ, many pilots use the field near the road below the take-off — watch out for electric wires along that road, and leave the field immediately after landing.
Launch & conditions
The take-off is best early morning when the rocks below the transmitter start warming. Read the wind carefully before committing: take-off sits under N, W and S winds, and an easterly stronger than a breeze on the launch can make reaching a comfortable landing awkward.
Getting there & local rules
From Méreuil village, about 10 minutes' drive plus 40 minutes' walk. Climb the east side toward Méreuil, then continue in the direction of 'La Montagne'. Just before La Montagne, leave the main road for forest track B22. If the barrier gate is closed, continue on foot; a 4×4 is recommended. Follow B22 for about 2.5 km to the end of the forest track where there's a turnaround area to park, then climb straight up through the oak/beech forest for 30 minutes.
Local rules & hazards
In summer, avoid flying after 12:00 in this area — take-off can feel smooth and fine while the valley below turns dangerous with strong breeze and overly strong thermals. Watch for electric wires along the road at the emergency landing near the dam.
