Bealach na Ba

Bealach na Ba, the classic Applecross road pass in the north-west Highlands, is more of a fair-weather curiosity than a regular flying site: launching from within the pass itself should only be considered as a nil-wind option. The pass is sheltered from westerly and south-westerly winds, and the main Applecross site actually lies on the SW-facing slopes of Meall Gorm nearby — read the wider conditions carefully before you commit to flying here. Once airborne, the best line usually follows the road, or hugs the east-side cliffs which can produce more buoyant air at the end of a sunny day.

In nil wind, launch is possible from the ground immediately east of the road at the head of the Pass itself.

Getting there & local rules

The Applecross peninsula is served by a tortuous single-track road that loops off the A896 between Sheildaig and Lochcarron. From Tornapress, follow the minor road a few kilometres to the pass. There's a large car park at the summit of the pass, plus a smaller space with room for a few cars nearer the head — please do not park in the passing places. Landings from the Bealach: land anywhere on the open hillsides, but watch the power lines running down the pass.

Local rules & hazards

The Highland Restricted Area (HRA) just misses the bulk of the Applecross peninsula — technically, midweek flying is possible when the HRA is active, but the area is often busy with military traffic entering and exiting the HRA. Use the military NOTAM service before flying. Strongly sea-breeze influenced. Severe rotor is possible within the confines of the pass in anything other than light conditions — treat flying inside the pass as a nil-wind option only.
