Beinn Bhan

Beinn Bhan (896 m) is the highest of the Applecross peaks in northwest Scotland — a spectacular east-facing wall of six great corries and giant Torridonian sandstone buttresses. The 447 m launch works on E and SE flow and offers real potential for both soaring and thermic flying. Its proximity to other Applecross launches makes it particularly attractive on days when wind direction is forecast to shift. Landing is possible anywhere at the base of the hill, though the ground is rough throughout, so pick your spot carefully. This is Scottish highland flying at its most photogenic and its most demanding.

Launch & conditions

From the parking area, cross the road and head straight up the hillside. The easiest line sticks to the south-facing shoulder over steep heathery ground and sandstone terraces; higher up, the hill offers many launch possibilities among shorter grass, heather and rock. The site rewards pilots who have taken time to read the terrain before committing to a launch spot.

Getting there & local rules

From the A896 Sheildaig-to-Lochcarron road, turn off at Tornapress and cross the head of Loch Kishorn to a sharp left turn. Just before the road climbs toward the Bealach na Bà, a left turn goes down to the fish farm and storage depot at the old Loch Kishorn docks — there is usually roadside parking here (not on the wrong side of the barrier gate).

Local rules & hazards

The boundary of the Highland Restricted Area cuts across the hillside below the Beinn Bhan launch — review the HRA midweek flying restrictions carefully before flying. The Applecross area often develops a sea breeze, easy to miss from the air especially when heading north across the front of the corries; deep glaciated valleys immediately behind the hill can generate rotor.
