Where it is

Soaring

Minster is a small chalk-cliff and grassy-slope soaring site on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent, offering a ridge run of about 100 ft grassy launches and 150 ft earth cliffs between Minster and Warden Point. It only works in a stiff north-easterly, but when it does the run is long enough — all the way to Warden Point, where the cliffs peter out — to make impressive height gains despite the modest ridge height. The site is a coastal favourite of local modellers and dog walkers as well as pilots, so courtesy to everyone on the ground is part of using it. Cliff profiles change constantly here: recent slippage means turbulence and hazards you flew safely last month may not be safe today.

Launch & conditions

Small rigging area — choose your spot carefully and leave room for coastal walkers to pass.

Getting there & local rules

On the road through Minster, turn left at the Abbey, follow the road around the left-hand bend, then take the signposted car-park turn (left) into Seathorpe Avenue and drive to the end. The takeoff is about 300 yards to the right of the car park at the end of Seathorpe Avenue.

Local rules & hazards

Do not fly west of the fenced enclosure just left of takeoff, and do not overfly the houses. The cliff profile is unstable and changing — expect rotor where there was none before, and re-assess conditions before every flight. Bottom landing under the cliffs is extremely hazardous: waist-deep mud when wet, deep ankle-breaking cracks when dry, and no landing area at high tide over most of the run. Watch for sudden squalls advancing on the water and yield to modellers and dog walkers on the ridge.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Minster, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Minster with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
