Where it is

Soaring

Nant Gwrtheyrn is a WNW-facing coastal site on the Llŷn Peninsula in north Wales, above the historic quarry village on the sea. It's a soaring site with specific no-landing zones marked on the club map — worth studying before you go. Access to the open land here is governed by Welsh Countryside and Rights of Way legislation: the general 'right to roam' in Wales does NOT include access to open access land for the purposes of hang-gliding or paragliding, so this site relies on separate arrangements. Site status is currently open — check with the local flying community before travelling.

Getting there & local rules

Reach the site via the road down into Nant Gwrtheyrn. Refer to the local club's mapped orange/red no-landing zones before launching or committing to a bottom landing. Site status can change — check before travelling.

Local rules & hazards

Site relies on specific access arrangements — the Welsh 'right to roam' does NOT cover hang-gliding or paragliding on open-access land under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000. Fly only when the site is marked open, and stay out of the marked orange/red no-landing zones.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Nant Gwrtheryrn, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Nant Gwrtheryrn with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
