Where it is

Muteck launches at 2,508 m above the Schwemmalm ski area in South Tyrol's Val d'Ultimo, at the top end of a ski lift — a launch point best suited to winter flying, when the lift is running. In summer, the equation flips: the lift isn't in service for pilots, so the only way to reach this launch is on foot from the Schwemmalm, making it a genuine hike-and-fly proposition in the warmer months rather than the lift-served winter launch it is in season. The recorded wind directions are south-east and south. Because access mode changes so completely between seasons — ride up in winter, walk up in summer — planning the approach around the time of year matters as much as checking the wind here. For pilots comfortable with either a winter lift-up or a summer hike, Muteck offers a genuinely high-altitude Alpine launch above the Ulten valley.

Getting there & local rules

Reached via the ski lifts in winter; in summer, only on foot from the Schwemmalm.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Muteck, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Muteck with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
