Watles – Praemajur

Watles – Praemajur is a launch at around 1,743 metres in South Tyrol, near the Hotel Watles, and it's flyable from east, southeast or south — good ground for both thermals and cross-country flying. A higher alternative launch is also reachable by chairlift from Watles, up near Pfaffensee at about 2,230 metres, for pilots wanting more altitude to start from. Access to the lower launch is by car to Praemajur, then a short gondola ride and about a 20-minute walk; a public bus also runs to Praemajur from the Mals-Schleis area for pilots without a car. Two wind rules matter here and aren't optional: never fly in a north wind, and the valley wind from the south can turn very strong, so respect it rather than pushing through it. Landing options are at Praemajur near the hotel, or lower down at Schleis/Clusio. Further down the Vinschgau valley toward Meran there's nowhere safe to land at all — it's wall-to-wall apple orchards — so plan the glide with that dead zone firmly in mind.
