Where it is

ThermalsSoaringHike & fly

Arnipa sits on the island of Andøya in far northern Norway, above the Arctic Circle. It's a mountain with real character — you can take off in almost any direction depending on the wind, with a 15–20 minute walk-up from the main parking on the north side. Best days are on an east or south-east wind. North/north-east takeoffs point down the valley towards the road (with the bog as landing); east/south-east is the fun soaring side; the south face gets steep with potential turbulence. The whole mountain is covered in sharp rocks — bring appropriate footwear and be careful with your gear.

Launch & conditions

Take-off possible in almost every direction. 15–20 min walk from the main north parking. N/NE toward the valley and the road; E/SE is the best soaring; S is steep with turbulence risk. The whole mountain is sharp rock — watch equipment.

Getting there & local rules

The road is closed in winter. From RV 80 (main road), turn onto the mountain road just 50 m north of Toyota Auto at Myrset. Follow the mountain road all the way to the parking beside a sheep paddock — close the gate as you pass through. Landings: on the bogs and open fields, but keep away from the cabins in the area (locals maintain the mountain road — don't disturb them). Wet landings possible; watch for sheep.

Local rules & hazards

Contact Andøya tower before flying — the site sits right at the edge of the control zone, so flight clearance is mandatory (the airport being closed removes the constraint). Close the gate when driving to the mountain. No landing near the cabins. No landing on the bog south-west of Arnipa — bird reservation. Do not scare sheep; keep dogs on lead April through October.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Arnipa, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Arnipa with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
