Where it is
Deda Bistra launches from a grassy slope facing southwest, about a 45-minute hike above its namesake village in central Romania. The takeoff itself is genuinely easy — open grass, no trees or bushes to clip on the way out — which is why it's often recommended to newer pilots for the launch alone. The catch is what happens afterward: this is a light-wind site only, since the surrounding hills accelerate the wind enough that anything above roughly 10-15 km/h makes launching unworkable. If a flight doesn't build enough height to clear back over the village to the open fields beyond, the two fallback landing areas both demand more care than the takeoff did — one sits at the base of the hill with large trees to avoid, the other in small grassy yards behind people's houses, where courtesy toward the residents matters as much as the approach itself. Reaching launch means driving the E578 from Reghin toward Toplița, turning off before the village church, crossing a small bridge, and climbing a steep, wooded path to the grassy summit.
Launch & conditions
The launch itself is easy: open grass with no trees or bushes in front, at the highest point of the hill facing southwest — good for newer pilots. This only works in light wind, though, since the surrounding hills accelerate anything stronger than about 10-15 km/h.
Getting there & local rules
From the E578 between Reghin and Toplița, turn left before the church in Bistra Mureșului village, continue about 600 m to a small parking area by a bridge, cross it and climb the steep path through the trees to the grassy summit — about 45 minutes on foot.
Local rules & hazards
This is a light-wind site only: winds above roughly 10-15 km/h get accelerated by the surrounding hills and make launching unworkable. If you can't fly out over the village to the open fields, the two fallback landings need more care than the takeoff — one has large trees near the base of the hill, the other sits among small grassy yards behind people's homes.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Deda Bistra, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch.
