Usambara Ridge above Lushoto is regarded as one of the best paragliding sites in Tanzania, launching at about 986 m with roughly 1,000 m of altitude above the valley floor and superb views even on days without lift. The grass and slopes at takeoff are kept well cut across east, south and west-facing lines, and big trees behind the launch make it possible to get away even with a slight tailwind. It's a well-established, privately run site with a long history of paragliding, so it doesn't require any special local briefing - travelling and experienced pilots can generally manage on their own. A small visitor fee applies (around 1 USD per visitor, 5 USD per pilot flying), and the owner keeps a simple hut at launch for rest and accommodation, with on-site takeoff assistance available. Access from Lushoto is easiest by motorbike (about a 2 USD ride) to the owner's hut near takeoff, or by a proper 4WD vehicle - ordinary 4WD taxis cannot make it up. Lushoto itself is reachable by express bus from major Tanzanian cities, including Arusha and Dar es Salaam, for around 10 USD, and the region's good climate and range of hotels and dining make a week or two of flying and tourism worthwhile. Flying is possible most of the year except the rainy season, though the middle of the day can turn complicated with peak heat, and short, sometimes dangerous gusts can appear around sunset.
