St Albert's Mission

St Albert's Mission is a Zimbabwean escarpment and flatland site on the northern edge of the Muvhuradhona mountains, above the Zambezi Valley. The 1,264 m launch faces east and works best on easterly winds. Because of the open topography, this is essentially escarpment plus flatland flying — the escarpment generally works best but the flatland is productive too, particularly in the region of the Muvhuradhona. The site is flyable year-round, but the Zambezi Valley is famously hot: summer flying can be draining if you end up hiking out, so carry a lot of water. Winter is the best flying season and also the safer window for mosquitoes and malaria.

Launch & conditions

The top is flattish to quite steep, and summer thermals really rip up the front — take care. Winching is possible on the road that runs east along the base of the escarpment. Check for smoke in the valley floor to read the true wind at take-off; still-air appearance can hide upper wind.

Getting there & local rules

Follow the road to Centenary and Muzarabani. Drive 30 km past Centenary and take the St Albert's Mission turning to the right before you head down the escarpment. Drive past the mission hospital and turn left at S16° 28' 09.8″ E31° 18' 43.3″. Follow the track down to the saddle and up to the promontory. 4WD is necessary for the last 200 m, though you can leave your vehicle before that if you prefer. Low-clearance vehicles are not recommended.

Local rules & hazards

Read the true wind by watching smoke on the valley floor — the launch can feel calm while the flow aloft is quite different. Summer heat in the Zambezi Valley makes any walk-out draining, so carry lots of water. Malaria season overlaps summer flying — winter is both the best flying window and the safer one health-wise.
