Soutpansberg launches from the Hanglip Main Picnic Area above Louis Trichardt in South Africa's Limpopo province, at roughly 1,600 m above sea level. The site sits inside active military airspace, so every flight needs advance clearance from the site controller and pilots must carry an airband radio. A short, scenic drive from the parking area under shady trees leads to a grassy takeoff facing south-east to south, with the turnaround from landing back to launch taking about 45 minutes on a relaxed drive up. The flying area covers roughly 150 sq km under a 9,500 ft AGL ceiling, giving good scope for thermalling and cross-country flights. Louis Trichardt itself sits about 4.5 hours by road from Johannesburg on good roads, with plenty of accommodation nearby. The minimum requirement to fly here is a S.A.H.P.A. Sport rating. Landing is below takeoff, and summer brings afternoon thermal activity plus the occasional storm, so plan flights around typical build-up timing.

Launch & conditions

Takeoff is grassy and faces south-east through south, at about 1,600 m ASL above the Hanglip Main Picnic Area, with parking under shady trees and only a short walk to the edge. Because the airspace is military-controlled, clearance from the site controller is required before every flight, not only on a first visit.

Getting there & local rules

From Johannesburg it's roughly a 4.5-hour drive on good roads to Louis Trichardt, with plenty of accommodation in town. The turnaround from landing back to launch is about 45 minutes via a relaxed drive back up.

Local rules & hazards

Flying is restricted to public holidays, Saturdays and Sundays, and only with prior permission from air traffic control obtained before each flight — a South African Sport-level rating or higher is required. Expect summer thunderstorms and a late-afternoon valley wind release, with poorer, milder conditions in winter; at the change of seasons watch for a shift toward northerly winds, which can bring severe rotor.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to soutpansberg, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open soutpansberg with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
