Where it is

ThermalsSoaringFlatland XC

Caesar Mine sits on Zimbabwe's Great Dyke, about an hour's drive north of Harare, launching from a small hill — only about 150 m — that faces due east into the area's prevailing wind. Northeast and east-southeast winds both work here, though wind from the southeast makes for a genuinely tricky launch. The takeoff itself is generally easy and suitable for beginners, if a bit rough underfoot in places. Thermals can build strong through the day, but the site swings between gusty and completely dead rather than offering steady lift, so patience matters. Evening ridge soaring is worth waiting for — the view alone makes it worthwhile — but because the hill is small, catching it well usually needs a confident, strong-wind launch technique rather than a beginner's first attempt. Getting there is a fairly involved drive through the Mazowe and Mvurwi roads north of Harare, climbing onto the Great Dyke itself via the Zimbabwe Alloys Caesar Mine road and a stretch of gravel track, finishing at the remains of an old hut that marks the takeoff. Cell phone coverage is intermittent here, so plan accordingly.

Launch & conditions

Takeoff is generally easy and suitable for beginners, though a bit rough underfoot in places. Evening ridge soaring is worth the wait but usually needs a confident, strong-wind launch technique since the hill is small.

Getting there & local rules

From Harare, take the Mazowe/Bindura road north, then the Mvurwi road, following signs toward Mutoroshanga and then Barwick School as you approach the Great Dyke. Turn onto the Zimbabwe Alloys Caesar Mine road, then left at the T-junction, through the remains of a gate and along a gravel road that climbs the Dyke. The takeoff is marked by the remains of an old hut, about an hour's drive from Harare. Cell phone coverage is intermittent.

Local rules & hazards

This site sits on the edge of Delta 70, an aircraft training area, though traffic rarely reaches this far out. In summer, watch for gust fronts arriving from distant storms.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Caesar Mine, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Caesar Mine with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
