Worlds View

World's View sits at 2,319 m on the eastern Zimbabwean escarpment near Nyanga, one of the finest flying spots in the country. The site works on N, SW, W and NW winds. Cloud base is highest during the dry, hot months of August and September, when exceptional flying is on the table. Summer can be very rough. Several take-offs sit along the escarpment, all a short walk from the road — 150 m at most — so pilots choose based on wind direction. Always watch for convergence cloud and check landing directions before committing. Some launches are prone to wind shadow, so be ready when pulling up: the glider suddenly entering the free airflow can pull you off your feet.

Launch & conditions

Multiple take-offs along the escarpment, all steep enough that there are no second chances. Some sit in wind shadow, so expect the glider to bite when it clears the shadow line. Be wary of soaring the cliffs just to the north of take-off in a northerly wind — you may well get slapped.

Getting there & local rules

About three hours east of Harare on a good road (except the last 6 km). Take the road to Marondera and turn left for Nyanga at Rusape. Take your time on the 80 km stretch to Juliasdale — the rock formations are stunning. Turn left in Juliasdale for Nyanga village, then right about 3 km before Nyanga at the Troutbeck hotel signpost. Climb about 12 km and turn left at the World's View sign by the horse stables. A normal car can make it up with a bit of care. The road curves gently right as you reach the escarpment edge.

Local rules & hazards

The military camp to the west is prohibited airspace. Try not to fly over the police camp in Nyanga Village, and it is ESSENTIAL to inform the police of your intentions before flying — the community has flown here for around 20 years without issues by keeping that relationship. Summer storms build fast; convergence is common, so check landing wind carefully.
