Kernville Slabs

Kernville Slabs is a ridge-soaring site above the Kern River in southern Sierra Nevada, California. The 1,051 m launch works on SW, W and NW flow and delivers a proper glass-off on evening flights when the wind is right — one local report describes a first-time glass-off cruising past sunset with easy climbs over the river to the west. Middle-of-the-day flying is NOT advised because winds get strong. XC potential exists earlier in the afternoon or in the morning. Launch is well wind-sheltered and can be deceptively calm — actual conditions above are quite different. This is not a casual coastal soaring site, and pilots should be very comfortable with spot landings before flying — the LZ is a tight 7 × 7 m concrete slab south of the campground with brush and trees on both sides.

Launch & conditions

The main launch faces WNW and needs a long run followed by dodging a few trees on the way out. Launch is very wind-sheltered, so the conditions you feel on the ground are not what you'll get above the bluffs. Even at evening it can be gusty with moderate turbulence — this is desert-side ridge flying, not smooth coastal air.

Getting there & local rules

Head to Kernville and drive north along the Kern River. Camp at any of the sites; the one below one of the area-classic rock-climbing cracks is the reference. From the campground beneath the slabs, hike up 20 to 30 minutes to work around the bluffs — minor scrambling required, and watch for snakes and skunks. Above the slabs the terrain opens into easier grass. The landing is a tiny 7 × 7 m concrete slab south of the campground with high brush on one side and smaller vegetation on the other — spot-landing skills are essential.

Local rules & hazards

Winds are strong during the middle of the day — flying is best morning or evening. Even the evening can be gusty with moderate turbulence, so treat this as an unforgiving inland site, not coastal soaring. Watch for snakes and skunks on the hike up.
