Lake Isabella

A ridge-soaring site above the lake in the southern Sierra, facing south into the predominant wind, which locals reckon runs like clockwork. You can cruise a long way west down the ridge, even jumping over the road, and it is possible to jump back to the ridge behind — though it gets somewhat technical back there. That comes with a real caveat: if you link the ridges further back, you may not be able to get out front again. Cutting through the bowl low is where a venturi builds as the extra wind pushes around the corner, and the beach becomes the landing. Sinking out behind means an hour-plus hike, although re-launching may save some time.

Launch & conditions

Launch from anywhere near the top of the radio tower. The road may work but can be a bit windy, and better conditions are often found a little further down. The launch faces south, into the predominant wind direction. It is about a 30-minute hike straight up if you park out front, or an easier stroll up along the road.

Getting there & local rules

Head to Kernville, then south towards the lake. There are lots of pull-offs in front of the ridge. A fenced-off road further along can be driven up, though the private-property situation there is unclear.

Local rules & hazards

The land on top is most likely private, so treat it respectfully — there is a small tower up there, and there is no need to fly anywhere near it. Wind strength builds as the day goes on and it can get very windy, so morning and late afternoon are the sensible windows; mid-day flying is best left until you have more experience, because the site does blow out. Landing is anywhere along the beach, either out in front of launch or near the picnic area to the east, leaving a 10 to 20 minute walk back to the car depending on where you parked.
