New Jack City – West Ridge

New Jack City West Ridge is the higher-profile launch in the small Mojave Desert site off Barstow Road near Lucerne Valley — described by local pilots as the 'money shot' of the area when conditions line up. A 100 m west-facing cliff drops to a reasonably long soaring band on SW flow, with reports of great days when the stars align. That said, most local attempts have been sled runs, with wind dying quickly below launch: it's an exploratory site, not a reliable daily one. The launch sits in a venturi so surface wind reads stronger, gustier and less directionally accurate than the actual free-stream flow. The area is primarily known for rock climbing; paragliders are a fringe activity. This is a one-flight-at-a-time site — plan late-afternoon launches once conditions settle, and land at the road at the bottom of the hill if you sink out.

Launch & conditions

From the New Jack City camping centre by the outhouse, look west and follow the old decommissioned road over the ridge — a 10- to 20-minute hike, about 120 m of vertical. The pad is a relatively flat area next to a post at the top; small plants and cacti should be cleared before laying out to avoid line snags. The site may also work for hang-gliders but getting a hang glider up the trail is a project. Above 20 feet the wind can already double from the surface reading — be ready for it.

Getting there & local rules

Same approach as the East Ridge — from Lucerne Valley, take Barstow Road (Hwy 247) north. About 17 miles past the turn-off, hit a high point; New Jack City is a couple of miles further on. Left onto the dirt/sand road (past the fenced high-pressure gas main sign), follow the well-trodden trails east into the New Jack City Bowl, then south toward parking. Land on the road at the bottom of the hill if the ridge doesn't work — long walk back.
