Crestline (San Bernardino)

Crestline sits about 1,590 m above San Bernardino, roughly 300 m (1,000 ft) higher than the Marshall Peak launch below. Winds are typically stronger here than at Marshall, so paraglider pilots pick Crestline when they need to lengthen a sled ride in weak conditions or fly the higher band when Marshall stays capped by an inversion. It shares Marshall's landing — the well-maintained Andy Jackson Airpark, a level grass field with defined patterns for hang-gliders and paragliders, shade, chairs and limited camping. USHPA membership plus a temporary Crestline Soaring Society membership ($20/month) are required to fly. Landing anywhere else in the valley is prohibited by City of San Bernardino ordinance — expect police tickets for infractions.

Launch & conditions

Moderate-size launch fitting 2–3 paragliders at a time, with parking behind launch on an asphalt road accessible in any vehicle. Marshall (300 m lower) is the backup on days when Crestline is too strong. Summer mid-day conditions can be dangerous — pilots are encouraged to launch after 5 pm on their first flight and work earlier as they read the day.

Getting there & local rules

The same landing as Marshall: Andy Jackson Airpark. Rides to launch can be arranged with local operators. Camping and RV parking at the LZ (no hookups, portajohn only).

Local rules & hazards

USHPA required, plus a temporary CSS visitor membership. Andy Jackson Airpark is the ONLY location in the valley where landing is legal — the City of San Bernardino ordinance against landing within city limits is actively enforced. Dust devils blow through the LZ on hot afternoons; sea-breeze fronts and occasional gust fronts from mountain thunderstorms are the day-turning events to watch.
