Where it is

ThermalsSoaringHike & fly

Winchester Bowl in southern California is used as a backup when nearby Soboba is too weak to soar — the wind at Winchester tends to be stronger, so on light days it takes over. Space is limited: more than 4–5 pilots in the air at once is a crowd unless it's a lifty day when everyone can spread out. It's essentially an evening soaring site: mid-afternoon cycles are very strong, calming down around 4:30 pm. Multiple launches exist (small SW-facing at the top plus a bigger South-facing one 30–40 m below), plus West, East and North options.

Launch & conditions

Primary launch plus West, East and even North options. Two seen at the top: a small SW-facing one, and a bigger more South-facing one 30–40 m below. ~20 min walk from the base to the top.

Getting there & local rules

Landings: land on the dirt road or grass. Avoid the barbed wire and any junk left around.

Local rules & hazards

There's an airport east of the ridge — don't get too high. Very strong cycles in the middle of the afternoon — typical SoCal conditions; often best in the evening. Space is limited: 4–5 pilots in the air is a crowd.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Winchester Bowl, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Winchester Bowl with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.

A day counts as flyable when the surface wind held in your range, from a direction the site flies, with no rain, for at least 2 hours in a row (08:00–20:00) — from hourly 10 m wind over the last 12 months. A seasonal wind guide only: it can't judge gusts, thermals or turbulence, and never replaces the live forecast, airspace checks and your own judgement.
