Season
Tenerife tourism gives Taucho's season as September to May and says Izaña flies all year. In our data, 84% to 100% of middays at Taucho were dry in every month, including winter. The trade wind blows from the north-east most of the year, which gives Taucho its south-west lee wind; on the north coasts, Famara and Los Giles had midday winds of about 13 to 28 km/h.
Flying
Taucho launches at about 850 m above Adeje with landings near the coast; Izaña, at about 2,180 m, is flown early before cloud or east wind closes it, landing in Puerto de la Cruz. Famara and Los Giles are soaring ridges close to the sea; at Los Giles you land on top.
Practical facts
- Taucho landing rules
- Landing on the sand beach in Costa Adeje is strictly forbidden and controlled by local police; landing spots near the coast change every year, so ask locally.[1]
- Izaña
- One of only two launches allowed in Teide National Park; fly early in the morning.[1]
- Los Giles
- Normal landing is on top at the takeoff; no beach landings.[1]
Hazards
- Taucho: do not fly if local pilots are staying on the ground; land quickly if white caps appear on the sea.[1]
- Izaña: with east wind at Puerto de la Cruz, stay over land on approach, never over the water.[1]
- Famara: beware of a power line when flying low northwards along the ridge.[1]
