Mt Dandenong

Mt Dandenong is an inland Victoria site conveniently close to Melbourne — its short drive-time and quick turn-around make it a popular local option. The 586 m launch works on SW, W and NW flow and produces reliable thermals in a wide range of conditions from light-and-variable to moderate. In summer it is frequently flyable but comes under the influence of the sea breeze; in winter, take-off often sits just above cloud base. The catch is landings — options are very limited, and it is critical for site preservation to know which paddocks are permitted and to inspect them before flying. The best LZs are private Salvation Army paddocks; the Pavitt Lane portion is a long skinny strip, and the remainder is subdivided by fences into small paddocks that demand careful landing technique.

Launch & conditions

The take-off is a steep metal ramp just above ground level through a slot in the trees. Clearance directly in front is limited; tall trees on both sides of the slot force you to time the launch and pick a technique that delivers full flying speed before you reach them. Not the day to fluff a run.

Getting there & local rules

The Salvation Army LZs are the primary landings. Beyond them there are very few workable options, so first-time pilots MUST contact the local club for current details on which paddocks are permitted and inspect them personally before flying. Site preservation depends on it.

Local rules & hazards

The club recommends the site only for Advanced-rated pilots, or suitably experienced Intermediates with mountain-XC background, on-site Advanced supervision, and a first-visit flight alongside an experienced local. Controlled airspace over launch caps at 4,500 ft (only about 2,000 ft above take-off) and drops to 3,500 ft in the suburbs out front — pilots must carry altimeters and observe the ceilings strictly.
