Huayllani

Huayllani is a thermal and cross-country site at 3,300 m in Bolivia's Tunari mountain range, above Cochabamba. Locals describe both takeoff and landing as easy, and the site flies roughly 80% thermal, 20% soaring, on wind from east through southwest. It's flyable most of the year, with the best cross-country potential from September to November and again from April to June; December through February brings too much rain to be worth the trip. Access is by a well-maintained stone-paved road that climbs to just below the small village of Sapanani, about 25 minutes' drive from the landing zone. There's no formal site regulation yet, but a flight path crosses the middle of the valley, so pilots are asked to stay close to the mountain rather than ranging out into open airspace. Fly in the morning: the wind turns strong and switches to a tailwind by around 2 p.m., and in August and the first weeks of September that shift can arrive as early as 11 a.m.–noon.
